ImgBurn: a free, lightweight disc burning tool for Windows
ImgBurn is a free, lightweight Windows application for burning CDs, DVDs, HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs, offering read, build, write, verify and discovery modes, broad image format support, and advanced DVD Video burning options, though its latest release dates from June 2013.
Core Functions
ImgBurn is a free, lightweight application for burning CD, DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. It is organised around separate modes, each handling a specific task, and suits users who need a compact tool for both creating and checking discs.
Operating Modes
- Read: Reads a disc to an image file.
- Build: Creates an image file from files on a computer or network, or writes those files directly to a disc.
- Write: Writes an image file to a disc.
- Verify: Checks that a disc is fully readable and can optionally compare its contents against a given image file.
- Discovery: Tests drive and media performance. Used together with DVDInfoPro, it allows the quality of burns produced by a drive to be assessed.
Supported image formats include BIN, CCD, CDI, CUE, DI, DVD, GI, IMG, ISO, MDS, NRG and PDI. Audio CDs can be burned from any file type supported through DirectShow or ACM, including AAC, APE, FLAC, M4A, MP3, MP4, MPC, OGG, PCM, WAV, WMA and WV. DVD Video, HD DVD Video and Blu-ray Video discs can be built from VIDEO_TS, HVDVD_TS and BDAV or BDMV folders respectively. Unicode folder and file names are supported.
For DVD Video projects, ImgBurn provides a layer break selection screen for double-layer jobs. An image queue handles several images in one session and can distribute them across multiple drives. The Automatic Write Speed feature stores preferred burn speeds per Media ID, down to individual drives. Data captured during a burn, such as write speed and buffer levels, can be displayed and analysed with DVDInfoPro.
ImgBurn supports Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, 7, 8 and 10, including 64-bit versions. Under Wine, it should also run on Linux and other x86-based Unix systems. ASPI drivers are only required on Windows 95, 98 and Me. The current version, 2.5.8.0, was released on 16 June 2013.
Drive support covers booktype, bitsetting and advanced settings on drives from BenQ, LiteOn, LG, NEC, Optiarc, Pioneer, Plextor, Samsung and Sony. The program is designed to work without configuration, while its settings allow advanced users to adjust its behaviour in detail. Interface translations are available in numerous languages. Companion tools such as BurnPlot, DVDInfoPro and Opti Drive Control are optional and not required for ImgBurn to function.
